San Ginesio: balcony of the Sibillini and medieval village to be rediscovered

Where: san-ginesio
(San Ginesio)
Genre: culture   nature   folklore

Inside the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains which it overlooks offering a breathtaking view, San Ginesio is a small town in the Marche region called 'the balcony of the Sibillini'. The village has the typical medieval characteristics and the defensive walls, Mure Castellane, are still for the most part intact. The Porta Nuova, also known as Porta Picena, is still clearly visible, from which you enter the area of the Ospedale dei Pellegrini, dating back to 1300. The Parco della Rimembranza is also characteristic, dedicated to the fallen of the two wars, built between 1925 and 1930 , still retains some decorations from the fascist period. Continuing on, you reach the main square of the village, with the monument dedicated to Alberico Gentili in the center, a well-known Italian jurist, originally from San Ginesio. It is also known as 'the country of 100 churches' because among those still in use and those now deconsecrated, there are many places of worship. Among the most important are: - the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, the only example of Gothic style in the region, which houses a prestigious cycle of frescoes in the crypt; - the churches of San Francesco and San Gregorio, not far from each other; - the Hermitage of San Liberato, dedicated to the saint whose remains it also conserves. Given the medieval tradition, in the village there are many historical re-enactments that take place during the year. For example, the joust of the ring, the palio della pacca or the battle of the Fornarina.
